How to use the Tab Composer

Typing notes

0–9Put a fret number on the current string. Type two digits quickly (e.g. 12) for frets 10–24.
← →Move between beats. → on the last beat adds a new one.
↑ ↓Move to a higher / lower string.
SpaceMake this beat a rest and move on.
BackspaceClear the note. On an empty beat it deletes the beat.
DelDelete the whole beat (or the selected beats).
iInsert an empty beat before the cursor.
Home EndJump to the first / last beat.
ClickClick any spot on the tab to put the cursor there. Shift+click selects.

Rhythm

,16th note
.8th note
/Quarter note
[ ]Shorter / longer: 32nd, 16th, 8th, quarter, half, whole.
dDotted note (1½ × the length).

The length applies to the current beat and to every new beat you add after it. Bar lines are added automatically from the time signature (4/4, 3/4 or 6/8). Rhythm marks are drawn under each beat.

Chords in one key

pPower chord (root, 5th, octave) on the string under the cursor and the next two.
mMajor barre chord: E shape from the 6th string, A shape from the 5th, D shape from the 4th.
nMinor barre chord with the same shapes.

Type the root fret first, then press the chord key. Example: cursor on the 6th string, type 3, press p → G5 (3-5-5). Chords are built from real pitches, so they follow the tuning: in Drop D a 6th-string power chord becomes the one-finger shape.

Techniques

hHammer-on / pull-off to the next note on the same string. Shown as h going up and p going down.
sSlide to the next note on the string (/ up, \ down).
bBend a whole step up.
vVibrato (~).
xDead note: a muted, percussive scratch.

Press the key again to remove the technique. Playback performs them: legato hammer-ons, gliding slides and bends, wobbling vibrato.

Editing

Shift+←→Select beats. Esc clears the selection.
⌘/Ctrl+C X VCopy, cut and paste beats (pastes after the cursor).
⌘/Ctrl+ZUndo. Shift+⌘/Ctrl+Z or Ctrl+Y to redo.
Shift+↑↓Transpose the note, beat or selection up / down one fret.
Alt+↑↓Move the note to the next string at the same pitch (find an easier fingering).

Instruments

4-string bassE A D G · Standard, E♭, Drop D
5-string bassB E A D G · Standard, Drop A, B♭
6-string guitarE A D G B E · Standard, E♭, Drop D
7-string guitarB E A D G B E · Standard, Drop A, B♭

Switching instruments keeps every note on the same-named string with the same fret, so a riff on the E and A strings moves straight from guitar to bass, and going to 7-string adds the low B underneath. Notes on strings the new instrument doesn't have are removed (press ⌘/Ctrl+Z to get them back). Chord keys work on every instrument.
